USB-C Charging Explained: Cables, Wattage and Fast Charging

USB-C charging guide

Why USB-C isn't one single thing

USB-C describes the connector shape, not the speed or power. Two cables that look identical can charge at very different rates. To charge quickly and safely, the charger, cable and device all need to support the same power level.

Understand wattage (W)

Wattage tells you how fast a charger can deliver power. As a rough guide: phones are happy with 20–30W, tablets and many laptops want 30–65W, and larger laptops may need 65–100W or more. A higher-wattage charger won't damage a smaller device — the device only draws what it needs — so a single higher-watt charger can cover several gadgets.

Fast charging standards

Most modern fast charging uses USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). Some phones add their own layer on top. For the fastest speeds, match a USB-PD charger with a cable rated for that power and a device that supports PD. If any link in the chain is slower, charging drops to the lowest common level.

Cables matter more than people expect

A cable has to carry the current. Cheap or damaged cables can limit speed or run warm. For high-wattage laptop charging, use a cable rated for 100W (5A) with E-marker support. For data and charging, check whether the cable also supports the transfer speeds you need.

Power banks and multi-port chargers

A good power bank lists both capacity (mAh) and output wattage — both decide how fast and how many times it recharges your devices. Multi-port chargers are great for travel, but remember total wattage is shared across ports.

Quick checklist

  • Pick charger wattage for your most demanding device
  • Use a cable rated for that wattage (100W/5A for laptops)
  • Look for USB-PD for broad fast-charge compatibility
  • For power banks, check both mAh and output watts
